What is an internship?

Are internships paid?
At The Grad Soc, our internships are paid if you’re working with a partner company, and you’ll earn £12 per hour, which is above the UK Living Wage! However, not all companies pay their interns (booo). Although unpaid internships are still common (unfortunately), they are becoming less common due to regulations that require companies to pay their interns in certain situations (finally!)
What do you do during an internship?
The tasks and responsibilities during an internship can vary depending on the type of internship and the company you’re working with. At The Grad Soc, we offer a range of internship opportunities, including: Social Media Marketing, Content Creation, Digital Marketing, Business Development, Sales, Research, Analytics, Customer Service, PR, Branding, Email Marketing, Administration and more. Your specific tasks will depend on your role and the company’s needs. Don’t worry – your responsibilities will be clearly outlined before and during your internship. We are always here to help and support you throughout your experience!
How does the internship application work?
The first step is to sign up for our internship email alerts, where you’ll receive opportunities directly in your inbox. These emails will provide all the details you need about the internship job description and how to apply.
Our short and easy application process usually involves the following steps:
- Completing our simple application form.
- Participate in a 15-minute interview with a friendly Grad Soc team member to get to know you and your skillset better.
- If successful, you’ll be invited to a final stage interview with a member of the team from our partner company.
Regardless of the stage you reach, you’ll never be ghosted. You’ll always receive feedback on what you did well and how you can improve.
How long do internships last?
Our internships typically last between 4 and 9 months, and sometimes even longer! For interns who impress, there may be opportunities to extend the internship or join the company as a permanent member of the team—whether part-time, full-time, or freelance.
How can an internship benefit me?
Internships can give you a taste of the working world without the pressure of a full-time job. They are designed to teach and train you, helping you develop new skills and providing a stepping stone to the next stage of your career. You can add your internship experience to your LinkedIn profile, include it on your CV, and discuss it in job interviews.
Will an internship lead to a job offer?
Only if you impress! Luckily for you, we have a 90% continuation rate – meaning that 90% of the companies we’ve worked with have retained their interns well beyond the initial internship period. Many of our interns go on to join our host companies on a part-time, full-time, or freelance basis.
How can I make the most of my internship?
During your internship, you’ll have an internship manager who will provide all the training and mentorship you need to help make the most of the opportunity. Here are some quick tips to help you succeed:

- Ask for help when you need it.
- Put your all into the tasks given to you.
