Internships are a really common way for young people to get their foot in the door of a company. But many tend to be full-time and require a significant amount of commitment on your part, something that isn’t great for students and graduates. If that’s not exactly what you’re looking for, there is a way around it: part-time internships!

Part-Time Internships For The Win

The answer is yes – some internships can be part-time! But that doesn’t mean all internships are created equal. Depending on the field and your employer, you may find yourself working full-time hours for a part-time wage. How do you know if an internship is right for you? It’s important to think about what kind of internship experience will benefit you most, and if it works with your schedule.

You may find yourself a part-time internship that can be completed as you study. So that means you don’t have to wait until summer break to dedicate yourself to a 9-5 internship. Employers may be willing to be flexible for you if you let them know exactly what your commitments are beforehand. As long as you can do the hours you agree on, and get the work done, there shouldn’t be a problem.

It’s always worth asking. If your dream internship is advertised as a full-time role, ask if they would be willing to shorten the hours. Try to negotiate with them about what works best for you.

Full-Time Opportunities

If a part-time internship isn’t the type of role you want, a lot of internship opportunities are full-time, 9-5, Monday through Friday gigs. These are super useful if you’re free during the summer, Easter break or the Christmas holidays.

You might also take on a full-time internship after graduating from uni and you are in need of work experience. With these opportunities you will be able to get a better understanding of a normal workday and how this structure works for you.

A full-time opportunity can also be great for letting you integrate into a company better. The more time you spend there, the more likely you are to build relationships and make a positive, lasting impression.

Find Flexible Opportunities

If you’re looking for an internship that is part-time or more flexible, this is definitely possible. Sometimes, these opportunities are more competitive, and you have to be super motivated to create a great application.

Find work opportunities that allow you to work anytime as long as you complete certain tasks in a set time. There will also probably be leniency if you’re working remotely or close to the office. An internship can be set, part-time hours or you can also find flexible roles that cater to you.

If you reach out to companies directly, you can ask if they would be willing to allow you to intern after finishing your daily lectures.

Basically, whether or not an internship can be part-time depends on the company and the type of internship offered. Some businesses will be much more flexible if they’re looking to attract students or grads for a fresh perspective. Others may be less flexible if there aren’t trying to attract GenZ. Either way, they can be invaluable to get experience in and help you land a permanent job.
